Chosen book - Alice in Wonderland
This book aims to create an immersive reading experience for children through typography design, immersing them in and complimenting the literary nonsense genre in a counter–school culture approach. My counter–school culture approach enables accessible and interesting reading, connecting the child to the visual aspects of the book and not just it’s content.
The design plays on this approach and the literary nonsense genre of the book through it’s size, presentation of body copy and dramatic expressive typography which has been inspired by the content of the book and the characteristics of the text, as well as the presentation style of Dada-ism.

My typographic, format and design choices are all built around this concept, designing in an unusual dramatic and random fashion in order to tailor the design to the tone, atmosphere and theme of each spread. Body text is displayed with unusual and disjointed rags, while expressive typography is used to showcase the personality and interesting phrases within the spread. This is added to by the use of a contemporary sans serif and the pairing of an energetic and dramatic contemporary serif. A colour palette which illustrates the anger, drama, confusion and daydreaming adds to the dynamic content of the book.
Finally an interactive element has been designed through Augmented Reality to enhance the reader’s experience and increase overall learning which was identified through research, further immersing them and getting them to interact with the type.
